Satisfaction With the Outcome of Physical Therapist-Prescribed Exercise in Chronic Whiplash-Associated Disorders: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial. Ardern C et al. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther. 2016 Aug;46(8):640-9.

Physical therapist- supervised, neck-specific exercises (including elastic resistance) performed at home for 3 months provided greater satisfaction and enablement in chronic whiplash patients after 12 months, compared to general physical activity.

One- and two-year follow-up of a randomized trial of neck-specific exercise with or without a behavioural approach compared with prescription of physical activity in chronic whiplash disorder. Ludvigsson ML et al. J Rehabil Med. 2016 Jan;48(1):56-64.

After 1-2 years, chronic whiplash patients participating in a neck-specific exercise program including elastic resistance retained more improvement than patients given a general physical activity program.

Adding cervicothoracic manual therapy to a physical therapist-prescribed exercise program including TheraBand resistance does not provide additional benefit in decreasing pain or disability.

Rehabilitation of subacromial pain syndrome emphasizing scapular dyskinesis in amateur athletes: a case series. Moura K et al. Int J Sports Phys Ther. 2016  Aug;11(4):552-63.

This case series presents 4 amateur athletes with improved scapular mechanics after an exercise program including elastic resistance.

EMG activity of the serratus anterior and trapezius muscles during the different phases of the push-up plus exercise on different support surfaces and different hand positions. Gioftsos G et al. J Phys Ther Sci. 2016 Jul;28(7):2114-8.

This study examined the EMG activity of scapular muscles while performing a push-up plus exercise on a wobble board with different hand positions, compared to stable surfaces.

This study compared 4 weeks of instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization (IASTM) and general exercise in patients with chronic low back pain

Effect of Kinesio Taping on Pain and Functional Disability in Chronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain. Al-Shareef A et al. Spine. 2016; 41(14):E821-E828.

Patients with lower back pain significantly improved in pain, ROM, and disability after 2 weeks of kinesiology taping compared to sham (no tension); however, the improvements were not clinically significant.

This paper describes a clinical test for assessing hip strength during the clam exercise with elastic resistance.

Non-operative management of femoroacetabular impingement: A prospective, randomized controlled clinical trial pilot study. Wright AA et al. J Sci Med Sport. 2016. 19:716-21.

Therapeutic exercise with elastic resistance and exercise balls is as effective at home as compared to a supervised exercise program with manual therapy in patients with hip impingement (FAI). 


Exercise therapy versus arthoscopic partial meniscectomy for degenerative meniscal tear in middle aged patients: randomised controlled trial with two year follow-up. Kise N et al. BMJ, 2016; 354:i3740

This randomized controlled trial in patients with a degenerative knee meniscus tear found 12 weeks of therapeutic exercise (including elastic resistance and exercise balls) was as effective as arthroscopic surgery at 2 year follow-up.

New exercise-integrated technology can monitor the dosage and quality of exercise performed against an elastic resistance band by adolescents with patellofemoral pain: an observational study. Rathleff M et al. J Physiother. 2016. 62(3):159-63.

Researchers used the Bandcizer® device to monitor and quantify the exercise dosage of a TheraBand resistance training program in adolescents with patellofemoral pain.

Short-term effects of kinesio tape on joint position sense, isokinetic measurements, and clinical parameters in patellofemoral pain syndrome. Kurt E et al. J Phys Ther Sci. 2016 Jul;28(7):2034-40.

In this randomized controlled trial of 90 patients with patellofemoral pain, 2 days of kinesiology taping significantly improved pain, proprioception (JPS), and daily limitations, compared to placebo taping.

Foam rolling increases range of motion and flexibly in both limbs, supporting the concept of a ‘cross-over effect’ of myofascial rolling

Resistance Training with Instability for Patients with Parkinson’s Disease . Silva-Batista C et al. Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2016 Sep;48(9):1678-87.

Adding standing on unstable surfaces (such as a Stability Disc) to a resistance training program for Parkinson’s patients significantly improves mobility (TUG) more than resistance training alone.

Novel physical activity interventions for older patients with prostate cancer on hormone therapy: A pilot randomized study. Sajid S et al. Journal of Geriatric Oncology. 2016 Aug; 7:71-80.

A 6 week home-based walking and exercise program using TheraBand resistance increased step count significantly more than a technology-based intervention in this pilot study of prostate cancer patients.

The effects of trunk stabilization exercise using a Swiss ball in the absence of visual stimulus on balance in the elderly. Kim M et al. J Phys Ther Sci.  2016 Jul;28(7):2144-7.

Older adults who performed trunk stabilization exercise on a TheraBand exercise ball had significantly better balance after 4 weeks if they trained with a blindfold compared to without.

Neuromuscular taping versus sham therapy on muscular strength and motor performance in multiple sclerosis patients. Constantino C et al. Disabil Rehabil. 2016;38(3):277-81.

This study compared the effects of kinesiology taping applied on the quadriceps of multiple sclerosis patients on walking and strength, finding significantly increased thigh strength compared to placebo tape.

This case study reported on a breast cancer patient who benefited from kinesiology tape for thoracic pain.

What is the effect of treating secondary lymphedema after breast cancer with complete decongestive physiotherapy when the bandage is replaced with Kinesio Textape? – A pilot study. Melgaard D et al. Physiotherapy Theory and Practice. 2016 Aug;32(6):446-451.

A pilot randomized controlled trial of breast cancer patients with lymphedema found that complete decongestive physiotherapy (CDP) in combination with kinesiology tape was as effective than CDP with a bandage, and may be more beneficial in application.

Adding elastic resistance equivalent to 30% of 1 RM during the squat or bench press once a week significantly improved strength and power in college basketball players significantly more than free weights alone.

Healthy overhead athletes do not benefit from kinesiology taping of the scapular muscles to support scapular kinematics after muscle fatigue.

This article describes implementing neuromuscular training, including exercise balls, into a prevention and performance exerciser program for young athletes.

The efficacy of blood flow restricted exercise: A systematic review & meta-analysis. Slysz J et al. J Sci Med Sport. 2016 Aug;19(8):669-75

In this meta-analysis of 19 studies (including some using elastic resistance), blood-flow restriction training was found effective at increasing strength and muscle size at intensities as low as 20-50% 1RM; therefore, BFR training with lower loads may be used when traditional higher intensity training is not appropriate.

In healthy subjects, kinesiology tape applied to the quadriceps does not change muscle activation during a squat compared to placebo tape.
